Goog-411 Isn’t what you think?

Say it ain’t so. Missed this from late last year – From ZDNet: Google’s free 411 service (1-800-GOOG-411) lets you find and call local businesses, but the service isn’t exactly as it seems. On the surface, it looks pretty straight forward, but spending lots of money advertising a service that has no clear potential to make money should have seemed a bit suspicious. read article

    I don’t see an underlying evil. Improving the still underperforming speech recognition arena /and/ providing an information service at the same time?

    Two birds, one stone my friend.

    Now, If they were logging incoming phone numbers with information requests, I think that’d lean a bit on the sketchy side – even though the equivalent is done billions of times a day on the good ole webternets…
