David Simon’s new HBO series ‘Treme’ debuted last Sunday, and I got to watch it recently.  It’s always tough to see New Orleans portrayed by the outside world, but Treme does so relatively well.   Gorgeous cinematography, great music and vibe – so we’ll try to forgive the heavy-handed cultural name dropping and awkward references.  All in all, I’m gratified to see our story being told by such a capable team.  Looking forward to episode two.

The sterilization proposal has a great deal in common with a previous proposal by Neo-Nazi David Duke, who formerly occupied LaBruzzo’s seat in the Louisiana House of Representatives. To wit, “David Duke, the unsuccessful candidate for governor, proposed legislation offering $100 a year to welfare recipients who used Norplant. That, too, was defeated.” (source:) LaBruzzo’s proposal goes even farther than Duke’s, as he has proposed permanent sterilization, as opposed to temporary birth control. Norplant, which Duke proposed using, has a 5-year period of effectiveness.

This dolt Labruzzo is actually my Representative – District 81 in Louisiana, which includes Metairie. Makes me wince, frequently. I’m being polite.

Got back from our Gustav evacuation, and was at our offices this morning when I noticed the new modification to our neighbor’s car. Yikes.

Now, I don’t mean that G.O.P. politicians are, on average, any dumber than their Democratic counterparts. And I certainly don’t mean to question the often frightening smarts of Republican political operatives.

What I mean, instead, is that know-nothingism — the insistence that there are simple, brute-force, instant-gratification answers to every problem, and that there’s something effeminate and weak about anyone who suggests otherwise — has become the core of Republican policy and political strategy. The party’s de facto slogan has become: “Real men don’t think things through.”
